Outerbanks Vacation - November 9, 2017

This morning we left Cape Charles at around 9 and headed for Norfold, VA and the naval base for a tour.  We first had to cross Chesapeake Bay on a 20 miles bridge/tunnel that was built in 1964.  Unbelievable.  You travel along on the bridge and then two times it becomes a tunnel under the bay so that boat traffic can pass overhead.  An engineering marvel for it's time and still is today!

It turned out that the naval base tour was only available at 1:30 p.m. and we were there at 10 and didn't want to wait that long, so we carried on South.  Especially as the weather has not been that warm we wanted to get further south.  We stopped at the Outer Banks tourist information and got some advice about camping and attractions.  We stopped at the Orval and Wilbur Wright Memorial in Kitty Hawk and saw where the first flight took place in 1903.  Quite amazing, the persistence of human beings!

Then we walked through the most amazing sand dunes in Jockey's Ridge State Park.

We also stopped at the Bodie Island Lighthouse. Just beautiful.

Now we are camping at Cape Hatteras Campground in Rodanthe, NC.  Just had a loving walk on the beach and the wind is blowing and it's 17 degrees, but cloudy with some light rain at times.  At least the cold is gone.
